My current thoughts

I had the unique opportunity to work in Dubai for 9 years. During the years I worked there, I had marveled at U. A. E’s wealth, riches, broad-mindedness, simplicity, and great vision for the future. Thanks to the oil wealth, not only the U.A.E, but the entire Gulf region became highly prosperous. Thanks also due to many visionary rulers, they had spent their wealth on productive and futuristic assets. They attracted the best talents from all over the world, benefitting mainly the under-developed and developing countries like India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Philippines, and several African nations. They had converted a desert into an oasis.

Some of these Arab nations, especially those like Abu Dhabi and Saudi Arabia, had been sitting on tons of oil wealth. Not able to find lucrative, yet, safe investments, a substantial portion of this wealth found their way into investments in highly developed nations like the USA, U.K etc., and substantially, in real estates too. Of course, a lot of money was getting wasted too.

During my stay there, I had always wondered why our India was unable to exploit our traditional bonding with the United Arab Emirates and their wealth for our productive developments. I had dreamed about a possible change in our country-to-country relationship. I had vocalized my feelings during casual conversation with many.

Remember, until a couple of decades back, our country and our banking system had always suffered from shortage of financial resources. Other than receiving substantial help by way of remittances from expat Indians in the U. A. E there was hardly any noticeable government-to-government bonding between India and the U. A. E. We could have constructively exploited our historical connections with them for infrastructure development in India during the eighties and nineties. India is known for honoring financial commitments and have never defaulted on our international commitments.

U. A. E prospered because of physical and intellectual labor of Indians for a substantial part. Our engineers, accountants, finance professionals, salesmen, and manual labor had helped Gulf countries, including U. A. E build their nations. We had enjoyed trade relations with them for thousands of years. We had never tried to rub these Arabic nations on the wrong side, so much so that, we were scared of even uttering the word ‘Israel’ in public. Indians are a much respected lot among the Arabs for their sincerity, loyalty and dependability. Many Arabs spoke freely Hindi and even, Malayalam. Everything was just ripe in our favor.

Probably, India missed some golden opportunities in the past.

I believe, the same story goes about our association with Israel too. We had failed in the past to use Israel’s superior knowledge, strategy, and technology for our benefit.

I now see an honest, strategic effort to rectify the past mistakes and build a fruitful relationship with U. A. E and Israel, not-withstanding our past ambivalent approach to Arab-Israel bilateral issues and conflicts. At least, a delayed realization and effort. We should only pray that the new approach brings positive results for India.

My dream about India – U.A.E relationship never found its way into a story, sadly though.

There is one more issue I must write about. That is about the North Eastern India. That might have to wait for a couple of days more….

My New E-book: “I want to know about…India, its States and Cities”

My New E-book: “I want to know about…India, its States and Cities”

Living in Tenkasi, during the last several years, I had been interacting with several groups of school children through my Youth Development programs. One impression I had been gaining was that several of these children – even from the matriculation schools - had lacked much awareness about anything outside the immediate place of their living. These rural children’s ideas about India, its several states and cities – with regard to its heredity, culture, history, current status and the future potential are generally perfunctory and need a lot of improvement. I had conducted regular classes on “India, its states and cities” for the children of the government-run middle schools. I had also conducted Quiz competitions on the same topic. These efforts had motivated at least some of these children learn more about our country.  Besides, these rural children also suffer due to the lack of an easy access to any comprehensive information about our country, though some information is always available in their text books, in bits and pieces. Not many read newspapers regularly too, thanks to the television media which is loaded too much in favor of commercial film and politics based programs. And, there is also very little motivation or encouragement for knowledge seeking among these rural children.

I had also been traveling to U.S.A regularly. Here, the young children have easy access to information through the internet. They get any information they want. However, there is also a lot of obsession among the children about computer video games and entertainment provided by several websites like YouTube. The children of Non-resident Indian parents too lack much information about India, except those provided to them by their parents. There is a vast amount of information about India on the internet, yet not available comprehensively to the school going children. I have found the children outside India are quite keen to know about India.

These two paradoxes – on one extreme, children have very little knowledge and access to information, and on the other, children wanting to know about India comprehensively – motivated me to think of preparing a comprehensive book on India, its states and cities.

So, I have now come out with a series of books, rather five volumes, under the title: “I Want To Know About…India, its states and cities”. They are comprehensive picture based E-books. I won’t call them exhaustive. They are more introductory. Quite a lot of information and pictures in one place, on India. Yet, something that could motivate the young children to research and find more information on specific areas and topics they would be further interested in, about India.

The first volume, which gives an overview about India is ready for publication. This will be available as an E-book in the next few days. The remaining four volumes will be on Eastern India, Western India, Himalayan India and Central India. I intend to publish all of them in the next couple of weeks. The idea is: the children in India can read these books during their forthcoming annual school vacation. Besides, I also intend conducting Quiz programs on India, its states and cities, for the middle school children in Tirunelveli District, sometime during July, 2016 and this E-book will be handy for them.

I hope the book will be useful to the primary and middle school level children in India and outside. I have kept the introductory price of the E-book at a modest level. Just Rs.100/- per volume. That too, the money I receive, selling these books will go towards social and charitable activities of my L. N. Charitable Trust. Though, the book is a priced edition to begin with, over time, I intend making it available in electronic format at very much subsidized cost for the children of government and government-aided schools in Tamil Nadu. Printing these books might be a very costly affair and I might not venture into it unless some publisher is willing to take it up.

I exhort you all to buy my books and gift it to your children and friends. Books are great gifts to your children.

Please let me know how you felt about the books. Please write to me at: neelkant16@yahoo.com

Best wishes to all children.

A message to my FB friends on my new e-Book: "I want to Know about........ India, its States and Cities

Dear FB friends:
I have conceived and completed the first draft of Volume 1 of my new e-book for children titled: "I want to know about......India and its cities". The book will be of 5 volumes and the Volume 1 is ready tentatively, subject to changes based on the feedback I receive from my well-wishers. I believe, the book can give an overview of some of the essential things children might need to know about India and its cities. The book will be appropriate for Grade 1 - 3for the NRI children and Standard 3-6 for children studying in English medium in India. The book, for the time being, is designed in the PowerPoint Slide Show and would be uploaded to my website or the site of E-book publishers later. I would like to get feedback from my FB friends on the book. Those who are serious about doing a critical book review may please write to me at:nellaiadhirai@gmail.com and the first ten requests would receive the file on their e-mail id. I look forward to your support to my mission to do what I can for the children and youth of India and Indian origin. Thanking you all in anticipation.

Flash Points of India

I just completed reading, with great interest, a new book titled: FLASH POINTS, written by George Friedman. The book begins with a detailed narration of how the Jewish family of George Friedman escaped from Hungary during 1949 to Vienna – to escape the communists – when he was just six months old and how the family landed in the U.S.A subsequently, crossing several borders – his mother first in New York and his father later in 1952. The modern-day European Union was crafted in large part to minimize built-in geopolitical tensions that historically have torn it apart. Friedman, attempts, mixing rich history and cultural analysis that its design is failing. FLASHPOINTS narrates a living history of Europe and explains its most volatile regions.

No continent is as small and fragmented as Europe. Europe today consists of fifty independent nations (including Turkey and Caucasus). Europe’s population density is 72.5 people per square kilometer. The EU’s density is 112 and Asia is 86. Europe’s geography means it can’t be united through conquest. It means that small nations survive for a very long time – with long memories that make trust and forgiveness impossible. The map of Europe in 1000 is similar to the map of 2000. Europe has been a place where wars repeated themselves endlessly.

Europe is divided into borderlands, where nations, religions, and cultures meet and mix, but they can also be the places where the wars are fought. These are flashpoints. In World War I and II all the borderlands in Europe became flashpoints that sparked and set off fires that grew and spread. There is frequently a political border within, but the borderland itself is wider and in many ways more significant. The most important borderland divides the European peninsula from the European mainland, the West from Russia. There is another borderland between the French and German worlds, stretching from the North Sea to the Alps. The Balkans are the borderland between Central Europe and Turkey. The Pyrenees range of mountains in the southwest Europe are the borderland between the Iberians (of Spain, Portugal and Andorra) and the rest of the Europe. There are even smaller ones surrounding Hungary, where Hungarians live under the rule of Romanian and Slovakian states. There is even a water border – the English Channel, separating the Britain from the continent.

Europe rebuilt itself with difficulty and with help from its victors and, was given back its sovereignty by the actions of others. Europeans ceded their empire, their power, even in some ways their significance, to the principle that they should never again experience the horror of those years nor live on its precipice as they did in the Cold War.

The Institution, created to ban their nightmares was the European Union. Its intent was to bond European nations so closely together in such a prosperous enterprise that none of its nation members would have any reason to break the peace or fear another. Ironically, Europe had struggled for centuries to free nations from oppression by other nations and make national sovereignty and national self-determination possible.

The question is whether the conflict and war have actually been banished or whether this is merely an interlude, a seductive illusion. Europe is the single most prosperous region in the world. Its GDP collectively is greater than that of the United States. It couches Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. Another series of wars would change not only Europe, but the world.

I had always wondered why in India we can’t make history lessons as interesting as the description about Europe’s Flashpoints goes about in this book. My impressions about ‘History’ as an academic subject was: history was dull, mundane, mere statement of facts (whether true or false) without giving an opportunity to the student to introspect and interpret history. As someone said, ‘History is the lies of the victors and the self-delusions of those defeated.’

The book is revetting, thought provoking and makes history, engrossing to read about.

Reading the book: FLASHPOINTS, I was subconsciously driven to compare India as we see it today and Europe and to introspect on the flashpoints as applicable to India. The arguments I would put forth are:

                                                                                        ...... to be continued
