15.02.18 - My thoughts, aspirations, and my writings

A few years back, I wrote a book under the title: WHAT IF OUR DREAMS COME TRUE! AN UNCOMMON MEETING WITH LORD SIVA. I worked hard for nearly two years to write this book. One of my readers had commented that she wondered whether several portions of this book were works of fiction or history. I poured out all my personal aspirations and dreams for our country in this book. To mention a few:
·         Building check dams, instead of mammoth water dams, across several rivers. I had read a number of reports about the great advantages of check dams and the negative impacts of large water reservoirs.
·         Eradicating begging, especially, child begging
·         Developing Sports as a Movement in India. With a little more than 125 crores of people our record of producing able sportspersons is abysmal. With very poor nourishment in what we eat and with a lack of sufficient physical activities and exercising, no wonder, our people become susceptible to all kinds of viruses and diseases.
·         Preventing the wealth of our ancient temples being swindled by recklessly selfish people, recovering the usurped properties, and restoring their self-management.
·         Restoring the true autonomy of grass-root administration at the village panchayats. A true Swarajya as envisaged by Gandhi ji.
·         Development of our waterways and our coasts as national highways for economical transport of goods.
·         A true integration of all communities into the mainstream, with only one identity as an Indian.
·         Above all, leading a truly conscious life. I believe, most people including me, lead a life of automatic and preconditioned responses to our life circumstances rather than leading a proactive, conscious life. Leading a conscious life is a pre-requisite to peace, happiness, and prosperity. In order for all the above aspirations to fructify we need to lead a conscious life.

These aspirations and dreams found their expressions in my above novel. I believe it is a great novel written with noble intentions. The book is available on www.pothi.com. (https://pothi.com/pothi/book/ebook-t-n-neelakantan-what-if-our-dreams-come-true)

Let me continue my thoughts tomorrow too…

21.07.17 Check Dams

21.07.17 Check Dams

My motivation to write about check dams emanates from a report titled “Check Dam could address salinity,” I happened to read in today’s The Hindu.

I have written and published an English novel titled: WHAT, IF OUR DREAMS COME TRUE! AN UNCOMMON MEETING WITH LORD SIVA. The book is about the life experience of an enlightened individual and his struggles and achievements, told in first person. Of course, for the narrator, it was no struggle or achievement – just finishing the agenda for which he came into being.

Here are the 7 of my dreams that eventually found their way into the book:
1.     Preventing flash floods by building check dams across         several small rivers
2.     Protecting the centuries-old assets of the temples from the     exploiters
3.     Eradicating begging, especially child begging
4.     Developing Sports in India as a Movement and make           many youngsters world-class champions
5.     Providing true autonomy to village administration (Gram     Swarajya on the models dreamed about by Gandhiji to         help rural development)
6.     People’s integration through people’s interdependence

The 7th is: For an individual to fight for these dreams he would need to be highly enlightened so that he is fearless, honest, determined, have no self-interest, maintains inner integrity, and loves our nation. Gandhiji was one such person in our recent history. He was also one of the most difficult to understand. That was the kind of narrator of this story in the book.

While preparing for the book, I tried to do some detailed research on all the seven topics.

While searching for ways to prevent flash floods, I came across several articles written by various professionals supporting construction of check dams, vis-à-vis, big water reservoir dams, which serve other purposes like generation of electricity etc. I learnt that check dams were effective in preserving the ground water potential, preventing flash floods, and protecting the flora and fauna of the region; they need less money, can be organized with local indigenous labor, don’t need enormous technological support, and so on. So, I borrowed the idea and built one whole episode, where the hero of the novel went about organizing construction of check dams on the hilly terrains across Tamirabarani River.

In the same way, in another episode, the people of a group of villages decide to construct another check dam in another place with their own personal finances and borrowing from the banks, rather than relying and waiting for the government to decide, plan and construct. Here, the question was: Do the people of a group of villages have the power to decide what development project they need and how they want to go about implementing the project?

Now, the current news report says check dams can present salinity of the water too.

There are 7 episodes in the book, each depicting approximately 7 years of life of the narrator, in 7 different places, along the River Tamirabarani – all abodes of Lord Siva.

The book: WHAT, IF OUR DREAMS COME TRUE! AN UNCOMMON MEETING WITH LORD SIVA is available on www.pothi.com, I would recommend this book to every avid reader. Books are great gifts. Please buy one today. Send your comments on the book. Greetings!

WHAT, IF OUR DREAMS COME TRUE! AN UNCOMMON MEETING WITH LORD SIVA

“What, If Our Dreams Come True!” is an Epic-style novel written by me. It is my first novel in English. It is my first full-fledged, published novel too.

What this novel is about

We all have dreams – both pleasant and unpleasant. Many psychoanalysts say that dreams result from our deep-rooted memories, emotional impacts from our past experiences, and our desires. Many times, we wish if only our dreams really came true. Other times, we pray that our dreams never come true.

We are all sensitive to things happening around us. This novel is an outcome of my anguish, my aspirations, my dreams and my emotional disturbances over many events. I was inspired by many news reports, books and articles of a few famous authors and columnists, and teaching from my gurus, to write this novel.

I believe, we can all collectively make this Earth, a better place to live in. We only want to be inspired. We await a trigger. We are all connected in some way. Relationship is the most important thing in life, and I believe it is worthwhile sacrificing anything and everything for the sake of relationship, though I myself struggle, imperfectly, towards this goal.

To achieve anything worthwhile, our physical, mental and psychological strength alone are not going to be sufficient. One needs spiritual strength too. One needs Grace. One needs Blessings.

Now, this story is about Poorna Chandran….

Poorna Chandran@Poornan, the narrator of the story in the novel starts off his life as a naïve, village teen, around the year 1945. Everything changes for him one day. He has severe stomach pain. Medicines fail to give him relief. All of a sudden, Lord Siva appears in his dreams and promises to cure him instantly on a condition that Poornan meets with him in seven of HIS places. His stomach pain is gone. The village astrologer opines that Poornan shouldn’t ignore Lord Siva’s ordain, lest he invites HIS wrath. So, on his advice, Poornan sets out along the banks of the river Tamirabarani – the perennial, sacred river of Tirunelveli District of Southern Tamil Nadu – to meet Lord Siva.

His first destination is Courtallam, famous for its waterfalls, herbs and siddhiks and most importantly, Chithra Sabhai, one of the seven abodes of Lord Siva. There, he encounters one siddhik who changes everything for him in his life. Incredible, nerve-racking experiences happen to Poornan during his encounter with the siddhik.

Armed with his experience at Courtallam, Poornan moves on to six more places along the river Tamirabarani. In each of these places, he has something, very significant, waiting to happen.

What happens in those places? You must read the entire novel to know………….

Epilogue

It took nearly two and half years for me to complete this novel in all respects. The novel took me to several small villages, towns, and temples along the river Tamirabarani and I gained richly from my visits, about my place.

The river Tamirabarani is, probably, the only river of Tamil Nadu to originate, run through, irrigate and merge with the sea within the State of Tamil Nadu. I read with great interest a book “Tamirabarani Mahatmiyam” published nearly a century back, lent to me by retired Professor Sri Sitaraman, one of my well-wishers in Tirunelveli. I read with great awe the mythological stories associated with the river. Another book “Tamirabarani Karaiyinile” written by Sri Muthalankurichi Kamarasu gave me a lot of insight about the river and several pilgrim centers around the river. This book, particularly, encouraged me to visit the ‘Nava Kailasa’ and ‘Nava Thirupathi’ kshetras on the banks of the river. I was only stopped at Sernthamangalam along the river, beyond which, I was advised I wouldn’t be able to go on my own as the river merges with the sea a few miles down the village.

I waited for more than a year to peep into the historic Chithra Sabhai and its paintings at Courtallam, which was closed for a long time for renovation works.

An Islamic stranger, whom I accidentally met in a tea shop at Kayalpattinam gave me very interesting information about the place and its surroundings that inspired me to pen a whole episode in this book.

In Cheranmahadevi, I had to wait for more than an hour for the temple priest to arrive to open the Siva temple on the banks of the river. The railway bridge across the river, touching the temple and the surrounding greenery inspired me to write another whole episode.

I learnt a lot from the priests of the magnificent Siva temples at Brahmadesam and Tiruppudaimaruthur. The bathing ghat along the river Gadana, a tributary of the river Tamirabarani at Tiruppudaimaruthur inspired me to write another episode of this novel.

I was awe-struck by the architecture of the Siva temple at Brahmadesam, built during the Rajendra Chozha period, almost a millennium back. The tall ‘Maruthu’ trees lined along the steep banks of the river at Ambasamudram formed a tantalizing arcade and lead one to the other Siva temple built during the same Chozha times. This, along with the steep stone steps just outside the Siva temple at Papanasam inspired me to write another episode.

When I crossed the old check dam along the river at Srivaikuntam and entered the town, I marveled at the uniqueness of the place – a holy place for both Vaishnavaites and Shivaites, a place where Lord Siva and Lord Narayana confluence – as a standing message about the Oneness of God. A place where all souls merge into One – Vaikuntam.

Rather, I can now write another entire book about how I wrote this novel.

I thank God for inspiring me to write this unique novel and I remain blessed.

“WHAT, IF OUR DREAMS COME TRUE! AN UNCOMMON MEETING WITH LORD SIVA” book is available on www.amazon.com as a kindle version and on www.pothi.com as print version.

I intend to serialize the novel through my website www.tnneelakantan.com and one chapter will be released every Saturday. I request readers’ to send their comments to info@tnneelakantan.com or neelkant16@yahoo.com

Free Download of my book: WHAT IF OUR DREAMS COME TRUE! AN UNCOMMON MEETING WITH LORD SIVA

Hello!

My latest book: WHAT IF OUR DREAMS COME TRUE! AN UNCOMMON MEETING WITH LORD SIVA will be available for free download on Sunday, the 27th April, 2014. I exhort everyone interested in reading to download, enjoy reading my novel, and comment on the book on www.amazon.com.

To tell you briefly about the novel:

We all have dreams. But for Poorna Chandran - or, to be short, Poonam - it was extraordinary. Lord Siva Himself appears in his dream. HE relieves Poorna Chandran of his acute stomach pain and ordains him to meet HIM in seven of HIS abodes. The local village astrologer warns Poorna Chandran not to ignore Lord Siva’s orders and suggests several places on the banks of the holy river Tamirabarani in Southern Tamil Nadu in India, where Poornam can meet with LORD. That sets the stage for Poornam’s journey into his life full of miracles, encounters, twists, associations, challenges and achievements. “Did Lord Siva send his army too in my life, when he ordained me to meet HIM?” wonders Poornam. Poornam dies in his old age, after being severely affected by paralysis, seeing himself on the international television channel, which became the first to tell his story to the world.

"What If Our Dreams Come True!" - my new novel

I am happy that my novel: What If Our Dreams Come True! - An uncommon meeting with Lord Siva has just been self-published on www.amazon.com and is available for buying for online reading - special price for Indian readers. It took nearly two years for me to ready this book for publishing. This novel took me to a number of small villages, towns, pilgrim centers for gaining firsthand information about the places along the holy Tamirabarani river, and also to several books about Tirunelveli District of Tamil Nadu in India, and several write-ups on the internet and the blogs. I am especially thankful to Wikipedia for the exhaustive information on any subject, for your asking. I was also influenced by the strong convictions of great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, who had the moral and spiritual power of mobilizing people towards Freedom for India. I was also influenced by reading books of Thomas Friedman, Shashi Tharoor, The Autobiography of Yogi Yogahamsa Paramanand, Neale Donald Walsch, Translated works of Ramakrishna Mutt, Chennai on Upanishads and the likes. More than anything else, I was tremendously influenced by the great teachings of Sri Amma Bhagawan in Southern India, who gave me an entirely different view of life and continue to guide me as my Antaryamins.

Now, the book is in the hands of the readers like you to pass their judgments on my work.

To tell briefly about the book.....

"Poorna Chandran, or Poornam in short, has a rare dream wherein Lord Siva appears before him and offers to cure his acute stomach pain on a condition that Poornam meets with HIM in seven of HIS places. His stomach pain disappears instantly. The local astrologer cautions Poornam not to take Lord Siva's conditions lightly and suggests seven of HIS abodes along the river Tamirabarani, in the Southern Tamil Nadu in India. Thus begins Poornam's journey into his life full of miracles, challenges, hurdles and achievements and most importantly, an uncommon meeting with LORD SIVA.

Poornam dies watching himself on the television, when an international news channel decides to tell his story to the world."

This book is a story of stories of people who came together for a shared destiny. "Did Lord Siva send HIS army of people in my life towards HIS purpose? wonders Poornam.
